Endocrine Disruptors: The Silent Saboteurs of Our Hormonal Health

If there’s one thing I see way too often in my practice, it’s young girls getting their periods way too early. I’m talking about 8-year-olds already experiencing menstruation, which is NOT normal. Our bodies are wired to follow a natural rhythm, and when something throws off our hormones to this extent, we need to stop and ask: what is happening?

And let’s be real—as women, we are constantly told that our hormonal struggles are "normal." You have horrible PMS that keeps you in bed for two days? That’s just part of being a woman!  You’re feeling exhausted and moody in perimenopause? Welcome to the club!  You have fertility struggles with no explanation? It happens!

NO. This is NOT normal, and we need to stop accepting it as if it were! ……

And before anyone thinks this is just a women’s issue, men are NOT spared. Low testosterone, infertility, poor sperm quality, and even man boobs (gynecomastia) are happening at an alarming rate. What do all these issues have in common? Endocrine disruptors.

What Are Endocrine Disruptors?

These are chemicals that mess with our hormones, sometimes mimicking them, sometimes blocking them, and often throwing everything off balance. The worst part? They are EVERYWHERE.

☠️ In our food.☠️ In our cookware.☠️ In our baby products.☠️ In our perfumes.

And yes, even before conception, we’re exposed to them! Babies in the womb are already absorbing endocrine disruptors through their mothers, affecting their development and future health before they even take their first breath.

Where Are Endocrine Disruptors Hiding?

Here’s a list of the worst offenders and what they actually do to the body:

BPA & Phthalates (Plastics, Receipts, Canned Foods)

  • Mimic estrogen, causing early puberty, fertility issues, and PCOS-like symptoms.

  • Lower testosterone in men, leading to low energy, mood changes, and poor sperm quality.

  • Linked to breast and prostate cancer.

Parabens & Fragrances (Perfumes, Lotions, Shampoos, Makeup)

  • Absorbed through the skin and act as xenoestrogens (fake estrogens).

  • Disrupt progesterone balance, which is essential for fertility and mood stability.

  • Linked to thyroid issues, weight gain, and estrogen dominance symptoms.

Pesticides & Herbicides (Non-Organic Produce, Grains, Processed Foods)

  • Block testosterone and progesterone production.

  • Linked to miscarriages, infertility, and low sperm count.

  • Accumulate in fat tissue, making weight loss harder.

Non-Stick Cookware (Teflon, PFAS)

  • Interfere with thyroid function, leading to fatigue and metabolism issues.

  • Affect fetal development and immune function.

Heavy Metals (Mercury, Lead, Aluminum – Found in Some Makeup, Cookware, and Tap Water)

  • Block iodine absorption, leading to thyroid dysfunction and brain fog.

  • Affect fetal brain development and increase miscarriage risk.

  • Can disrupt ovulation and sperm quality.

How to Clean Up Your Hormonal Environment

Let’s get to the good stuff—how do we detox from these endocrine disruptors? Here’s your action plan!

Clean Up Your Diet

✅ Choose organic when possible (especially for the "Dirty Dozen" produce).

✅ Avoid canned foods (BPA-lined).

✅ Limit processed foods—they contain preservatives and hormone disruptors.

✅ Prioritize grass-fed, hormone-free meats.

Swap Your Cookware

❌ Ditch Teflon and non-stick pans (they release PFAS).

✅ Use stainless steel, cast iron, or glass instead.

Detox Your Beauty & Skincare Routine

🚫 Avoid products with parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances.

✅ Look for natural, fragrance-free brands.

✅ Perfume lovers—switch to essential oils instead!

Rethink Your Baby Products

Avoid plastic bottles and sippy cups with BPA. Choose organic baby lotions, wipes, and shampoos. Wash baby clothes in fragrance-free detergent.

Support Your Body’s Natural Detox Pathways

Eat cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, kale, Brussels sprouts) to help the liver metabolize estrogen.

Drink plenty of filtered water (avoid tap water that contains contaminants).

Move your body!!!! Exercise helps flush out toxins.

The Ripple Effect: How Endocrine Disruptors Cause Deficiencies

Here’s where things get really interesting. These disruptors don’t just mess with hormones—they also deplete essential nutrients, leading to a cascade of imbalances.

Fragrances & plastics block zinc absorption → Zinc is crucial for progesterone production → Progesterone imbalance = PMS, anxiety, and infertility.

Pesticides affect magnesium levels → Magnesium regulates cortisol (stress hormone) → Low magnesium = stress overload & adrenal fatigue.

Heavy metals interfere with iodine → Iodine is essential for thyroid function → Thyroid imbalance = weight gain, hair loss, brain fog.

See how everything is connected? This is why I specialize in hormonal imbalances—because symptoms don’t exist in isolation. There’s always a root cause!

Take Back Control of Your Hormones!

Endocrine disruptors are EVERYWHERE, but that doesn’t mean we’re powerless. Small changes add up. Start with one swap at a time, whether it’s your food, your cookware, or your skincare. Your hormones (and your body!) will thank you!

Have questions about your own hormonal balance? That’s where I come in! I specialize in endocrine health and can help you pinpoint what’s going on in your body. Whether it’s early menstruation, severe PMS, fertility concerns, or perimenopausal struggles, there’s a way to restore balance naturally.
